WTF is… Sesame Seed Oil?!

The sesame seed is hardcore: It’s plant is able to grow in drought, flood, and nutrient poor soils. It is one of the oldest seed crops known to humanity, at least 5000 years old. Heck, it is utilized across the planet as an edible, processed into a cooking oil and even utilized as a skin care product. So yeah, sesame seeds are the McGuyver of the crop scene, older than dirt and useful in just about every situation.

Sesame seeds have been in vogue for a very long time. Records from civilizations as old as Babylon and Assyria mention sesame, around 4000 years ago! Historically, sesame was favored for it’s ability to grow in areas where other crops refused to grow. In addition to being obscenely resilient, it is one of the worlds earliest condiments. Seeing as it is rich in calories, protein, dietary fiber, fats, B vitamins and dietary minerals can you really blame them for loving it so much?

When not being used on hamburger buns or as a cooking oil , sesame seed oil is a fantastic source of our old pals linoleic acid (a delightful moisturizer), oleic acid (a friendly neighborhood skin softener), and a new gang of pals, the phytosterols, which is great for softening skin, battling weather damaged skin and reducing inflammation.

Like the ancient Egyptians we use sesame seed oil in our product for it’s healing and restorative properties. Oasis Body Butter and Hatshepsut Skin Parfait, from our Jewel of the Nile line, are rich in sesame seed oils to soothe and moisturize your skin. Our Aftercare Whipped Buttercream, from the Erotica Sensualis line, also has sesame seed oil in it, to help soothe skin after strenuous activity.

In addition to be absolutely delicious and fantastic smoothie filler did you know that mangoes are also good for your skin? The colorful party fruit of any good fruit salad is good for you inside and out! As an edible Mangoes supply you with plenty of vitamin C and some folate but did you know that the oil derived from it’s seeds, known as Mango Butter, is great for soothing skin?

Let’s start at the beginning. Mango butter (or mango oil) comes from the mango seeds, the fruit of which is grown in tropical areas all over the world, with the largest producer by far being India. Mangoes are a large part of Indian culture, religion and daily life. Heck, the national fruit of India is the mango! In India, the mango fruit is eaten and prepared as a cuisine, dried mango skins and seeds are used as medicines, leaves of the mango tree are used as decorations for holidays and celebrations… The list goes on! Is it any wonder that here at The Raw Spa, we love using it as well?

The mango butter we use in our product is an excellent source of oleic acid (a great skin softener), stearic acid (good for moisturizing and keeping our skin flexible), and the xanthone Mangiferin which is a fantastic anti-oxidant in addition to having anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Our Aftercare products from the Erotica Sensualis line uses mango butter to help with soothing the skin after certain rigorous activities (wink).

And the Green Nile body balm as well as all our Selene products from our Jewel of the Nile line are rich in mango butter to keep your skin as smooth and supple as Egyptian royalty.

Our new twist this season is trying mango butter in “It’s Alive!!”, as part of our Things That Go BUMP! line.

All this week, all our mango butter laden products are 10% off! Be sure to try some today!

WTF is… Cocoa Butter?!

Almost everyone loves chocolate. Some of us like it with milk, some of us like it dark and bitter. Sometimes we eat it in a cake, sometimes we sip it by the lake… And I think I will stop myself before I try to write the entire post as a re-envisioned “Green Eggs & Ham” limerick. You all know how delicious chocolate is, so I probably don’t have to launch myself into prose and poetry anyway.

What some people might not realize is that chocolate is actually good for you. Not only eating it, but rubbing it into your skin, too!

Cocoa butter, and chocolate, come from the cacao tree, native to Central and South America. Treasure by the Aztecs and Maya as a tree of the gods, cacao was traditionally ground and mixed into drinks. Introduction of chocolate to Europe saw the addition of sugar and vanilla to make the chocolate more palatable. Europeans were fast to realize benefits of the naturally occurring caffeine in chocolate, and the nobility of many countries quickly adopted chocolate into their diet as a restorative and invigorating drink, much as a cup of coffee is use nowadays.

This is what we hardly ever see, before the chocolate, and the cocoa butter, and the cocoa powder, the pod!! I hear raw cacao taste super nasty. Never tried it.

Cocoa butter is the natural oil, with the cocoa solids removed. As a result, although it has a delightful chocolate scent, and even a chocolate flavor (if you suddenly desire to gnaw on a brick of cocoa butter), it does not have more than trace amounts of caffeine. It is, however, very high in oleic acid and palmitic acid, which is awesome for skin!

Cocoa butter is packed with antioxidants, which help to keep skin looking young and helps to combat premature signs of aging. It also helps to reduce scar tissue. If that doesn’t make it wonderful enough, cocoa butter also has wonderful skin conditioning, skin softening and moisturization properties.

At The Raw Spa, we use cocoa butter in a wide range of products, for the sweet scent it contribute, and for the delightful skin softening properties it has. All of the Cleopatra range, as well as the Nefertiti range are packed with cocoa butter, to the extent that the bath salts include finely grated cocoa butter for a rich bath soak!

We have also worked cocoa butter into the new Pumpkinhead products and Candy Man products, which are part of the limited edition Things That Go BUMP!! Line!

All this week, products that feature cocoa butter will be 10% off, over at www.therawspa.net ! Enjoy!! 🙂
