WTF is…Oats?! (Version 2.0)

We decided it was time to update our oats post, because as we have a grown, so too has our research… and it turns out that oats are way more awesome than we thought they were!! Oats are great for helping your skin fight off the harsh conditions of winter (or cooked with milk and a heaping pile of brown sugar dumped on top!). So grab your grains and hunker down. It’s time to talk oats… again!

Mmmm-mmm! Good inside and out! Photo via freefoodphotos.com

Before the simple oat (Avena sativa) was recognized as the grain we all know and love (with brown sugar), it was considered a weed. In fact the term ‘sewing wild oats’ is a reference to the rampant and widespread growth that oats were once known for. However after it was domesticated, oats became a staple in many peoples diet, even to this day! In Scotland oats are still held in high esteem and are a mainstay of the national diet. In Britain oats are sometimes used for brewing beer. Even here in America, you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who’s never heard of good old fashioned oatmeal (with brown sugar- ALL the brown sugar).

Not only are oats a great source of energy, but they’re also good for your skin too (but leave out the brown sugar if your going to be smacking oats on your face… apparently brown sugar doesn’t go with EVERYTHING.) Oats are great for gentle exfoliation, as they soften with water, but they are more than just an killer scrub for sensitive skin!

Cleopatra Salt Bar

The Cleopatra Salt Bar is a gentle soap for dry and sensitive skin, loaded to the gills with finely milled oats and local honey… try not to eat it!

Oats also contain a whole host of phytochemicals that make them absolute rock stars for skin, including saponins, which help to gently remove dirt and oil from your pores; polysaccharides, which become gelatinous in water and leave a protective residue on the skin preventing further damage; flavonoids and silicic acid to intensely soothe skin irritation, agitation and redness; Vitamin A to rejuvenate your skin; and Vitamin B to help hydrate your skin while also making it feel softer and smoother! Calming, moisturizing, exfoliating. What else can we say but: Bring on the oats!

Morganics Oats

It doesn’t get any fresher than local farms! We adore our oats supplier, Moraganics Family Farms! Photo via www.morganicsfamilyfarm.com

When it comes to our oats, we’re pretty proud to say that our oats come from a local farm, Morganics Family Farm (you can find out more about them on their website ). Located in Hillsborough, New Jersey, this family run operation grows the best oats ever. Seriously. THE BEST. Plus we think it’s pretty cool to be able to so drastically reduce our carbon foot print with such a ubiquitous ingredient. You can grab Morganics oats in Philly at the Headhouse Farmers Markets on Sundays (If Mack doesn’t beat you to it and buy them all…).

Cleopatra Bath Cupcake

We always seem to have issues convincing people that this oat-packed Cleopatra Bath Cupcake goes in your tub, not your stomach!

We use oats in all their many forms, from the rich oat milk that we swirl into Skin Parfaits, and the milky oat tops that we infuse into Skin Tonics, to the ground oats the we pack into our shower bars and bath confections! if you’re rocking some seriously dry skin, you’ll be happy to know that oats reign supreme in the Cleopatra line up, which you can find here:¬†https://www.therawspa.net/jewel-of-the-nile

Cleopatra Skin Parfait

It’s creamy, it’s dreamy and it’s packed with fresh oat milk, made with local Morganics Oats and a little patience! The Cleopatra Skin Parfait is a boon for those wrestling with dry or sensitive skin!

If you’re wondering how you can start rocking the oats right now, we’ll have a post up later this week with one of Mack’s super special house specialties, the Milk & Honey Face Wash! Don’t let the name fool you- oats are the star of the show! ūüôā

So, what do you think? They’re a little more awesome than you thought, right?

Reunited and it feels so GOOD!

Hey gang!

So…yeaaaaah we were delayed a LOT longer than we originally anticipated. Our website problem only highlighted a whole bunch of other issues we already had with the store that we sort of brushed under the rug and when they returned they came back with vengeance.

But (mostly) everything is fixed and to show you how much we care and how sorry we are for putting you off for so long we MADE A FREAKING VIDEO!

How’s that for upping our game? A step in the right direction no? In the future we¬†plan on making¬†more silly videos of us making product and fooling around in the kitchen and maybe even footage of us at some live events! ¬†Updates will be sporadic at first while we figure out how to make the moving pictures obey¬†but this is a new thing that’s here to stay.¬†There’s not much up there now but just you wait!

So make sure you check out The Raw Spa YouTube channel in addition to the blogs!

Speaking of new things, we’re currently designing¬†a new booth set up for when we go to conventions and farmers markets. Our previous booth setup was very…well the best way to describe it is “cute”. It was pretty much a card table with a cloth over it and our display on top. Very lemonade stand if you know what I mean.

But NOW we’re transitioning from lemonade stand to full on travelling circus! And while we can gush and wax poetic about how cool it’s going to look for days, we’ll just say that there will be many, many pictures once¬†it’s done.

Last thing, we know we’ve been dipping our toe into the whole Patreon thing. Little tag lines like “Support us on Patreon here“. But seriously, take a look and see what we have to offer. If you’re the kind of person we think you are, you’ll really like our stretch goals. And you’ll REALLY like what you’ll be getting for helping us out.

Thank you for bearing with us and our absenteeism this February. Everything will run smoothly from now on. Blogs are going back up once a week, flash sale notices will be regularly posted.

The Raw Spa is back!

WTF is… Honey?

Honey. What is not to love about honey? It has a pleasingly sweet taste and aroma. We use it in food, drink, and alchohol. Shoot, in america we go so far as to call loved ones by the nickname ‚ÄúHoney‚ÄĚ. Honey even has a kind of cult status in the DIY natural health community, supposedly having the ability to help heal wounds and serve as a preservative. While we recommend you comb through the facts yourself, we here at the Raw Spa will give you just a tiny scoop (okay I’ll stop now).

To lets start from the basics. Honey is a thick substance created from nectar, mainly by honey bees of the genus¬†Apis.¬†For the sake of simplicity I’m going to call them honey bees… but they are, interestingly enough, not all bees. The honey bees collect nectar from various flora, convert it into honey through a method of partial digestion, and store it in a wax matrix (the honey comb) as a food source.¬†Speaking of food source, honey is NOT especially nutritious all by itself. In fact honey is mainly devoid of essential nutrients, and contains only trace amounts of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Now just because it’s not all that great for you inside does not mean it’s bad for you outside. It DOES contain ferulic acid and caffeic acid. Ferulic acid is a wonderful anti-oxidant and helps to moisturize skin, while caffeic acid offers both antioxidant properties and anti-inflammatory properties. So it does have skin soothing, anarchist fighting – sorry, totally meant free radicals. What was I thinking?! – free radical fighting properties. As an added bonus, honey also acts a a humuctant, which is fancy-speak for saying that honey helps to draw moisture into the skin, as well as having softening properties.

So while it’s no Philosopher’s Stone, it is pretty awesome stuff… and it is incredibly delicious! Did we mention that?

Now we here at the Raw Spa have a few products that use honey, specifically for the soothing properties it has on irritated skin. The Aftercare Skin Parfait, Aftercare Body Frosting from the Erotica Sensualis line and Green Nile Body Balm from the Jewel of the Nile line all pair honey with soothing raw aloe, to make for absolutely fabulous creams to slather all over your body. You can also find honey liberally swirled through all of the Cleopatra products- formulated for sensitive and/or damaged skin.

Cucumber Spa Water + Rambles, Take One!

Wow. That was one long semester! Sorry to have fallen off the radar like that. A lot of unexpected things came up in the past few months, and between life and classes, it was sort of like a long, drawn out game of emotional Whack-A-Mole… Only less fun.

The good news is that I survived finals, and the semester is O-V-E-R!!!!! While my body and at least 30% of my brain (look, guys- upper level Anthro classes will FRY the brain…) survived intact, my skin (Oh GOBLINS, and my poor, poor poor face!) did not fare so well. Apparently a solid diet of energy drinks do not do the body good….

In light of this fact, I did the only fairly quick fix for the zombie-finals-of-DOOOOOOM look I was rocking – water.

I know it sounds absolutely ridiculous, but water is really amazing. It helps your body, and your skin, to purge toxins, it helps your blood to flow, it can keep a dehydration migraine at bay, and it improves the overall appearance, texture and tone of skin!

How awesome is that!? Don’t you just LOVE WATER???

…I don’t.

I hate the taste. For those of you about to argue that water has no taste, trust me. it has a taste. In Philly, it tastes like a blend of a tin can, salt, a touch of bleach and a little more chlorine than you want to have come out of your tap. Absolutely disgusting.

However, I am pleased to say that I found a way to fix water, so that not only does it still do awesome things for my health and my skin, I can also drink it without mimicking the Mr. Ick sticker.

I’m a little bit behind on the trend, but apparently, it’s called (drum roll, please!)

…. SPA WATER!

::cough:: Okay, so it’s just infused water, and I used to do it when I was a kid, with dried fruit. But I recently learned that in addition to saccharine dried apricots, you can pretty much chuck anything you want into a jug of water (besides maybe a raw steak…. or raw chicken… ) and it will taste amazing!!

This is the blend that’s been chilling in my fridge for the past two days. I have found that as long as the ingredients are really fresh, I can just keep topping off the jug with new filtered water, and it’s fine for about three days. Then it starts to lose it’s flavor, and all the fruits and vegetable and herbs start to look depressed.

I’ll be posting more Spa Water recipes over the course of the summer, but this one is super easy, and you can always find a decently ripe cucumber in the grocery store.

Cucumber Sort-Of-Mojito Spa Water

Cucumbr Mojito Water

You will need:
1/2  cucumber, thinly sliced (because it looks prettier in the jug)
1/2 c. fresh cilantro, left whole

3 slices of lime

water

something to put it all in to

All you do is drop the cucumber and lime slices into the container, and stuff in the cilantro on top. The mess of stems and leaves on top will help keep the cucumbers and limes from splashing into your glass when you are pouring your water.

Top the container off with water, let it chill in the fridge for about an hour, and enjoy! Every time you pour a glass, just remember to add more water.

Another option, which works just as well, is to fill empty water bottles with the infused water. Throw a few in your bag every day before you head out the door, to help yourself stay hydrated and happy!

Sore Throat Sippies, Natural Remedy

Yeah, I’m still sick. On the bright side, I’m getting better every day, just in time for final exams! Yay!! (Not really “Yay!”, I hate finals…)

Anyway, part of having this wonderful flu-bug is the sore throat. No matter how much water and orange juice I drank, my throat still felt like the Sahara during a heat wave.

Enter my Sore Throat Sippy! The recipe is super simple, and it makes a really lovely non-caffeinated tea even if you don’t have a sore throat!

What You Will Need:

1 Tbs. whole cloves

1 slice of lemon

Boiling water

Honey to taste

Put the cloves and lemon slice into a mug, top with boiling water and stir in the honey. Allow the blend to steep for three minutes, and enjoy!

The honey and the cloves both soothe and help to heal your throat, and the lemon gives you a little bit of vitamin C, which certainly won’t hurt you. ūüôā

I hope you like the recipe! And I promise, once I’m all healthy again, and through finals, I will focus more on skin and beauty care, instead of plague-care!
